Reuse an old router to bridge devices to your wireless network

Linksys WRT54G with DD-WRT installed
Many smart or connected devices come with wired-only connections (Ethernet), like your TV,game console, DVD player, TiVo, or other streaming-media device. Unless your Internet modem or wireless router happens to be at the same location as those devices, connecting them to your wireless network can be a challenge.

Possible solutions include, power-line adapters, dedicated wireless adapters for each device, or installing Ethernet jacks. Unfortunately, those options can get expensive and each has its unique drawbacks. Another option is using a wireless bridge. A wireless bridge connects two wired networks together over Wi-Fi. The wireless bridge acts as a client, logging in to the primary router and getting an Internet connection, which it passes on to the devices connected to its LAN Jacks. You can buy a dedicated wireless bridge, but if you have an old router lying around, you might be able to convert it into a wireless bridge using DD-WRT.
Client Bridge mode
A wireless bridge connects two wired networks together over Wi-Fi.

DD-WRT is free Linux-based firmware for routers that replaces the router's factory firmware. It can breathe new life into an old router, giving it enhanced performance and new features. One of the features of DD-WRT is the ability to switch the router's function to a wireless bridge.
This tutorial, based on the DD-WRT Wiki, will go over how to configure DD-WRT for use as a wireless bridge (client bridge mode), using a Linksys WRT54G router as an example. The process is fairly straightforward but will require some time and patience to complete. In the steps below, primary router refers to the main router that you'll connect to, while bridge routerrefers to the router you're configuring as a client bridge.
Step 1: Check the DD-WRT router database to see if your router is supported. If your router isn't supported, keep an eye out at The Cheapskate blog for router deals. Rick Broida recently found a refurbished router with DD-WRT support for just $9.99.
Step 2: If your router is supported, you'll see it listed in the database and it'll include links to the firmware. It may also include device-specific directions on how to install DD-WRT, but you'll want to read over the general installation notes as well. In some cases, you'll need to install a firmware prep, prior to installing the actual DD-WRT firmware. It's possible to brick your router during installation if not performed correctly, so read the directions carefully and follow each step as noted.
Step 3: Once you've successfully installed DD-WRT, perform a hard reset on the router. This usually involves holding a reset button/pin for 30 seconds or until you see the router's lights flashing. Refer to your router's user manual to figure out the exact method for a hard reset.
Step 4: Connect an Ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN jacks on the bridge router, then set a static IP address on your computer. Use something like 192.168.1.10, so you'll be on the same subnet as the bridge router, which will have an IP address of 192.168.1.1.
Step 5: Open a Web browser and enter 192.168.1.1 in the address bar. The DD-WRT Web interface will appear and you'll be prompted to change your username and password. Choose a username and password, then click the Change Password button.
Step 6: Go to Wireless > Wireless Security, then set the same Security ModeAlgorithm, andShared Key as your primary router. Click Save.
Step 7: Go to Wireless > Basic Settings, then change the Wireless Mode to Client Bridge. Set the same Network Mode and SSID as your primary router. If your bridge router is an N router, you may also need to set the same wireless channel width as your primary router. Click Save, then Apply Settings.
Step 8: Go to Setup > Basic Setup, then fill in the router IP info. For the local IP address of the router, choose an address in the same subnet as your primary router. If your primary router is on the 192.168.1.x subnet, choose something like 192.168.1.15. Leave the Subnet Mask as 255.255.255.0 and enter the IP address of your primary router as the Gateway. Leave Local DNS blank and select your time zone. Optionally, you can check the box to Assign WAN Port to Switch. This converts the WAN port to a LAN port, providing you with an extra port on your bridge router. Click Apply Settings.
Step 9: Log back in to your bridge router using the new address you set (192.168.1.15).
Step 10: Go to Security > Firewall, then under Block WAN Requests, make sure that only "Filter Multicast" is checked. Click Save.
(Credit: Screenshot by Ed Rhee/CNET )
Step 11: Under Firewall Protection, make sure "SPI Firewall" is disabled, then click Apply Settings.
Step 12: Go to Setup > Advanced Routing, then set the Operating Mode to "Router." Click Save.
Step 13: Remove the static IP address from your computer and re-enable automatic IP addressing. At this point, the bridge router should pass along an IP address from the primary router to your computer, giving you access to the Internet.
Step 14: Once you've verified that your computer can access the Internet while physically connected to the bridge router, you can disconnect your computer. You're now ready to connect your wired devices to the bridge router from anywhere in your home (within range of your primary router).
Notes:
  • If you're using MAC filtering on your primary router, you'll want to add the bridge router's wireless MAC address, not the LAN MAC address that's usually printed physically on the router. To find the wireless MAC address, go to Status > Sys-Info.
  • If your primary router is a Wireless-N router, but your bridge router is a Wireless-G router, you may need to set the wireless mode to a setting that supports b/g networks.
That's it. Now you can connect all your wired devices to your wireless network, even if they're not next to your primary router. It's worth mentioning that a wireless bridge is also useful when the scenario is reversed. If you have your Internet modem and primary router next to your TV, but need connectivity to your computer in another location, you can use the wireless bridge to provide a connection to your computer, printer, NAS, etc.

Experience "heaven" with New Smart Samsung Galaxy Heaven

A couple of years ago, Samsung was widely known as an electronic device maker. Later, it became a dominat force in the mobile phone world with its affordable mobile phones and innovative concept designs. After the evolution of Android OS into the market Samsung adopted this OS and designed an array of Android Smartphones. Samsung's contribution towards the Android success is phenomenal. The recently announced Samsung Galaxy S II was a big hit and sold 10 million handsets so far. In a greater extent, Samsung was so popular as a Android Smartphone maker.

Interestingly, Samsung was the one who introduced the brightest AMOLED and Super AMOLED Plus screen to the mobile world. During an event in Jan 2011, they showcased a first prototype of Samsung Flexible AMOLED 4.5 inch WVGA display screen. This screen measures just 2 mm thick and can be morphed into any shape. Later, there were some speculations touting the device with the flexible screens which is just a rumor for the time. However, it doesn't mean the devices using the flexi screen is just a dream. This could certainly happen in the mere future.
Based on the same flexible AMOLED display, there was a concept designed by a set of people. This was titled with Samsung Galaxy Heaven and some specifications were framed accordingly. Let's anticipate this could happen.Samsung-heaven-4

Android 4.1 for AT&T Samsung Skyrocket: Install Jelly Bean Based Liquid Custom ROM

The AT&T Galaxy S2 Skyrocket has been given an unofficial taste of Jelly Bean Android 4.1 already via custom ROMs (AOKP and CM10), and now another Jelly Bean ROM has come out for it, called Liquid ROM.
Jelly Bean custom ROMs for the T-Mobile Galaxy S2 can be found  here.
Liquid ROM is based on the latest version of Android and features very smooth performance as well as a lot of customization settings via the BirdNest settings mod. Then of course you have Jelly Bean features such as a butter smooth interface and animations, improved notifications menu, Google Now’s voice recognition search, and lots more.
Keep in mind that this is not an official Samsung ROM. It’s a custom ROM that is under development and may have a few bugs and issues, and some things may not work properly and some stock Samsung ROM features will not be available.
The following issue(s) currently exist in the ROM (quoted from the developer, the most updated list of issues can be found on the development page linked in step 3 of the guide below):
Known Issues:
Video doesnt save for some reason
Now, let’s take a look at how the ROM can be installed on the AT&T Galaxy S2 Skyrocket.
Compatibility
This ROM and the guide below are compatible only and only with the AT&T Galaxy S2 Skyrocket, model number SGH-I727. It’s not compatible with other US variants of S2, the Epic 4G Touch, and AT&T Galaxy S2 or any other device. Check your device’s model number in Settings» About phone.
Warning!
The methods and procedures discussed here are considered risky and you should not attempt anything if you don’t know completely what it is. If any damage occurs to your device, we won’t be held liable.
1.    This procedure will wipe all your apps, data and settings. Backup your Apps and important data — bookmarks, contacts, SMS, APNs (internet settings), etc. This Android backup guide would help you.
NOTE: Don’t forget to at least note down your network’s APN settings, which are required to make mobile data work. Go into Settings » More » Mobile Networks, click on the APN that is in use, then note down the setting for each field. While APN settings should be automatically restored from network, you can enter them manually if needed to make mobile data work. You can also find your APN details → here.
2.    [Important!] Install the ClockworkMod (CWM) Touch recovery on the phone by following the guide → here
3.    Download the latest version of the ROM for Skyrocket from the development page.
4.    Download the Darkside Venom 7.3 kernel. This is required to make the ROM boot.
Download Kernel  |  Filename: hercules_DARKSIDE.VENOM_A07.3_CM10.zip
5.    Download the Google Apps package. This will install apps like Play Store, Gmail, etc. which are not present in the ROM by default.
Download Gapps  |  Filename: gapps-jb-20120811.zip
6.    Copy the 3 zip files downloaded in steps 3, 4 and 5 to the internal SD card on the phone (do not extract them).
7.    Turn off the phone, then boot into recovery mode. For this, press and hold these 3 buttons together until the screen turns on: Volume UP + Volume Down + Power. Phone will boot into CWM recovery.
8.    Perform a Nandroid Backup of your existing ROM, so that you can always restore it from recovery if something does not work out with this ROM. To perform a backup, select Backup and Restore –> On the next screen, select Backup again. Go back to main recovery menu after backup is complete.
9.    Select wipe data/factory reset, then select Yes on next screen to confirm. Wait a while till the data wipe is complete (this will not erase your personal files on the SD card).
10. Now select install zip from sdcard, then select choose zip from sdcard. Scroll to the ROM file on the SD card and select it. Confirm installation by selecting Yes – Install _____.zip on the next screen. The ROM will start installing.
11. After ROM installation completes, select choose zip from sdcard again, then select the hercules_DARKSIDE.VENOM_A07.3_CM10.zip file to install the kernel. The phone might reboot into recovery after the kernel flash completes, which is fine.
12. After kernel installation completes, select choose zip from sdcard again, then select the gapps-jb-20120811.zip file to install the Google apps package.
13. After installation is complete, select go back then select reboot system now to reboot the phone and boot up into Liquid ROM.
NOTE:If you want to go back to your previous ROM, boot into recovery (like you did in step 7), select backup and restore then restore your previous ROM by selecting it from the list.

Liquid ROM, based on Jelly Bean Android 4.1 is now installed and running on your AT&T Galaxy S2 Skyrocket. Visit the official development page for updates and more info. Share your thoughts on the ROM in the comments below.

UCLF5 — Update AT&T Skyrocket to Latest ICS Android 4.0 Build

It’s been almost 8 months since Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) Android 4.0 came out, but AT&T Galaxy S2 Skyrocket owners are still waiting for it. A few Android 4.0 firmware have been leaked for it in past months, but the official update still hasn’t yet been released. And now, another Android 4.0 firmware has been leaked – UCLF5, which you can flash on your Skyrocket to try out ICS while you wait for the official release.
Important NOTE: This is not a final or official update, so it can have a few bugs and issues and some things may not work correctly. It also contains new bootloaders, which can brick your device if something goes wrong, so make sure to read the instructions carefully.
Read on to find out how you can update your AT&T Galaxy S2 Skyrocket to UCLF5 Android 4.0 firmware.
Compatibility
This firmware and the guide below are compatible only and only with the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket, model number i727. It’s not compatible with any other device and may render an incompatible device unusable. Check your device model in Settings » About phone.

How to Install UCLF5 Ice Cream Sandwich Firmware on AT&T Galaxy S2

  1. This procedure will wipe all your apps, data and settings (but it will NOT touch your SD cards, so don’t worry about those). Backup your Apps and important data — bookmarks, contacts, SMS, APNs (internet settings), etc. This Android backup guide would help you.
Important! Don’t forget to at least make a backup of your APN settings, which you can restore later if your data connection does not work after installing the ROM. Use the backup guide to find out how.
  2. Download and install drivers for the phone on your computer.
    Download Drivers  |  Alternate Link
  3. Download the firmware by following the download link on the original download page. On the download page, click on the link next to the File URL text as shown below in screenshot to get the direct download link.
  4. Double-click on the downloaded I727UCLF5_OneClickBin_DEABC2C0A29DD59C387453B159AF9730.exefile to run Odin, which will be used to flash the firmware on your phone.
  5. Now, boot into download mode on the phone. To do this, turn off your phone. Plug in your USB cable to the computer, but not to the phone. Then, holding the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons on the phone, plug in the USB cable to the phone while holding those buttons. Once the Download mode screen shows up, let go of the buttons.
  6. The Odin screen will say “Added!!” in the message box below when the phone is connected to the computer. If it does not, make sure you have the proper drivers installed on the computer.
  7. Click on Start to start the flashing of UCLF5 on your Galaxy S2 Skyrocket.
  8. Wait for the procedure to finish. After flashing is complete, the phone will reboot, and you’ll get a PASS message (with green background) in Odin. You can now safely disconnect your phone. What to do if Odin gets stuck: If ODIN gets stuck and doesn’t seem to be doing anything, or you get a FAIL message (with red background) in ODIN, disconnect the phone from the PC, close ODIN, remove battery, re-insert it, then repeat the procedure from step 4.
  9. If you run into any roadblocks while flashing the firmware, let us know and we’ll try to help you out.
The latest Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0 firmware is now installed on your AT&T Galaxy S2 Skyrocket. Let us know what you think of it, in the comments below.
