Nokia puts Windows Phone future on display (live blog Wed.)

LONDON - Nokia's big comeback could start this week as the beleaguered cell phone maker is set to introduce its first smartphones based on Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 operating system.

On Wednesday, the Finnish cell phone maker will kick off its Nokia World Event here in London where CEO Stephen Elop is expected to provide an update on the company's progress in its close strategic relationship with Microsoft, as well as take the wraps off the first smartphones that will use Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 OS.
The event is make-or-break for Nokia, which has lost significant market share over the past two years as Apple'siPhone and a slew of devices using the Google Androidoperating system have gobbled up new wireless subscribers all over the world. In addition, the new Nokia phones will be the first products the company has introduced as a part of itsrelationship with Microsoft. In February Nokia announced a partnership with Microsoft and said it would ditch its old Symbian smartphone operating system and replace it with Microsoft's Windows Phone software
The strategy is a huge gamble for Nokia, which has seen smartphone sales stall as it has retrenched. The success of the new Windows Phone smartphones is key to Nokia's turnaround and survival. And now after months of anticipation, the day has finally arrived when Nokia will show off the fruits of its new strategy.
So far, Nokia hasn't provided many details about the new devices or how and where it will launch the new phones. On a quarterly earnings conference call last week, executives said it will launch the devices in a few select markets in the first quarter of 2012 and then expand to more markets later in the year.

15 Hot New Technologies That Will Change Everything

Memristor circuits lead to ultrasmall PCs. Intel and AMD unleash massively multicore CPUs. Samsung TVs respond to your every gesture. These and other developing technologies will fundamentally change the way you think about--and use--technology.

The Next Big thing? The memristor, a microscopic component that can "remember" electrical states even when turned off. It's expected to be far cheaper and faster than flash storage. A theoretical concept since 1971, it has now been built in labs and is already starting to revolutionize everything we know about computing, possibly making flash memory, RAM, and even hard drives obsolete within a decade.
The memristor is just one of the incredible technological advances sending shock waves through the world of computing. Other innovations in the works are more down-to-earth, but they also carry watershed significance. From the technologies that finally make paperless offices a reality to those that deliver wireless power, these advances should make your humble PC a far different beast come the turn of the decade.
In the following sections, we outline the basics of 15 upcoming technologies, with predictions on what may come of them. Some are breathing down our necks; some advances are still just out of reach. And all have to be reckoned with.

Apple iPhone 4/iPhone HD Leaked

Most of us had forgotten the next iPhone in all the iPad and iPhone OS 4 hype. Here are some pictures of a differently designed Apple iPhone. It is a unibody casing made out of aluminium. Could this be the new Apple iPhone 4/iPhone HD?
We believe that it is. While the leaked pictures don’t say much but what is evident is the lack of a cameraflash. What makes us more certain that this is indeed the next generation iPhone is the 64GB engraving below the iPhone and Apple logo. It is customary for Apple to double the storage of it’s flash based products like for the iPhone 2G-3G-3GS, iPod Nano etc.
The pictures aren’t of the actual device but instead of the casing so there are no frontal pics. But the body seems thinner than before at certain angles. The aluminium casing sounds good as scratches and fingerprints can be eliminated.

Walk to Charge your Cell Phone

Charge your Cell Phones by wearing these special shoes, developed by Tom Krupenkin and J. Ashley Taylor at the University of Wisconsin Madison. Tom Krupenkin who is a professor of mechanical engineering, describes in an article in Nature Communications paper about the energy-harvesting technology known as “reverse electro-wetting” a phenomenon discovered by the two researchers. Electro-wetting is when “the shape of a liquid droplet sitting on a liquid-repelling surface is charged by applying voltage to the surface. Krupenkin and Taylor’s technology, however, reverses this principle.
Both the scientists now aim to commercialize their technology at the company they have recently founded – InStep NanoPower. Krupenkin and Taylor expect the energy harvester to be ready in two years. They developed this technology with a grant from the National Science Foundation.
How it Works:
The mechanical energy is converted to electrical energy by using a micro-fluid based device, consisting of thousands of liquid micro-droplets interacting with a nano-structured substrate. Placed in a shoe, the device captures the energy of moving micro droplets and converts it into electrical current.

Mozilla to Develop OS based on android!

Mozilla, who are renowned for their successful internet browser, are entering the mobile race, developing a new web-centric OS that will directly compete with Google, Apple and Microsoft.

If the name Mozilla rings any bells it's because they're the tech boffins who put together Internet Explorer, the browser that Windows defaults to. Mozilla took the leviathan computing company on with its Firefox browser, and today it stands as the second most popular browser worldwide.

Now the company who was underdog to Microsoft looks to be playing the same role, but this time against internet mogul Google.

Announced on the Mozilla discussion forum, Mozilla have begun coding for phones and tablets. The BBC revealed the mobile operating system will draw on Android code, with Mozilla writing as much fresh code as possible. The hybrid-like operating system will be named Boot To Gecko.

It is an unusual name for an OS, until you remember Gecko is the rendering engine employed by the Firefox browser that interprets web page coding and displays it in a screen-friendly format, a homage to its origins.

Even though Android coding will form the operating system's foundations, Mozilla hope to add a much more open wrapper around it than Google currently do, making it more versatile as an operating system.

Its shared foundations will also make Boot To Gecko compatible with the same phones as Android, competing as a direct alternative to Google.

Often, when you select a link from an application native to the Android or iOS market, the operating system will have to open a new webpage in the browser. Boot To Gecko aims to limit this by making applications much more web-centric.

If the venture proves successful, Mozilla will be waging war against industry giants, with Google, Apple and Microsoft dominating many facets of the technological world.
